This month marks the 45th anniversary of the Range Rover. Conceptualised and prototyped in 1966, before being released 4 years later to critical acclaim, the Range Rover is one of the world’s most desirable SUVs – and certainly the world’s first luxury SUV.

Throughout it’s 45 year lifespan, the success and reputation of Range Rover has endured through each generation. One of the most sophisticated 4x4s available, Land Rover continues to innovate with new technologies and designs. It is this commitment to moving forward, while holding dear all the elements that make Range Rover so iconic, that contributes to Range Rovers worldwide success, with an extremely large Chinese market that appreciates the luxury and quality of this 4×4.

The Birth Of The Range Rover Classic

Released in 1970 to critical acclaim, the Range Rover Classic was originally a two door vehicle with a manual gearbox. However, following its early success it quickly evolved to become a 4-door model just 11 years later, with an automatic gearbox version making its deputy in 1982. As you might expect from 4×4 vehicles, this early iteration of the Range Rover Classic was put through its paces in order to earn its reputation.

And, as you might expect, the Range Rover Classic rose to the occasion. From completing an 18,000 mile expedition across America to winning the Paris-Dakar rally in 1979, the Range Rover Classic wracked up the accolades for being a luxury SUV that didn’t skimp on off-road ability.

The Evolution Of Range Rover

Subsequent generations of the Range Rover continued to impress, particularly as new, more powerful engines and technology emerged. And that’s not all. From designers to artists and beyond, the Range Rover captured minds and hearts, inspiring a range of special edition vehicles to enter the market. In 1999, ten special edition Range Rovers were produced, inspired by furniture designer Lord Linley. Along with the ultra-luxurious interiors, this vehicle also was one of the first to feature a sat nav and a television. Luxury, indeed!

Now in its fourth generation, the Range Rover continues to delight and inspire. There’s no question that, as technology further evolves that both Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles will evolve in line with that to deliver a luxurious driving experience that looks as capable off-road as it does on it. We’re certainly looking forward to witnessing what the next 45 years of Range Rover will bring!
