Engineered by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), the Range Rover Sentinel is a true mobile fortress featuring everything from bulletproof bodywork to a self-sealing fuel tank. Armoured Range Rovers have long been used all over the world for security purposes but this is the first one that is officially Land Rover. The vehicle meets the VR8 ballistic standard and uses the wheelbase of the Range Rover Autobiography providing the highest levels of protection an SUV can offer as well as a full suite of personalisation and safety tech options.

Luxury Fortress on Wheels

The bodywork of the Sentinel is able to withstand 7.62mm armour-piercing rounds, 15 kg Trinitrotoluene (TNT) blasts and DM51 grenade explosions both above the roof and beneath the floor. Passengers in the vehicle are seated in a specially-developed six-piece armoured passenger cell made from super-high-strength steel and the standard glass has been replaced by multi-laminated bullet-proof armour privacy glass.

Additionally, the Range Rover has a self-healing fuel tank that will seal up if any assailant shoots at it and the anti-tamper exhaust protects against anyone crawling around under the car. The Sentinel also has a 100mm opening in the driver’s window allowing documents to be exchanged without compromising the security of the vehicle as well as an emergency escape hatch hidden beneath the rear seats if the occupants are trapped inside.

Performance wise, the Sentinel features a 340 PS (336 hp) 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine that sends power to the wheels via a specially-calibrated ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The suspension has also been upgraded to handle the extra weight and can handle a payload of up to 650kg. There are run flat inserts in the tyres which are fitted to special 20-inch split rim alloy wheels as well as 380 mm (front)/365 mm (rear) ventilated disc brakes featuring high-density brake pads.

Power & Style

Prices for the Range Rover Sentinel start from £400,000 without any extras, so you may need to save up for a while before investing in one. Nonetheless, the Sentinel is an impressive feat of engineering while retaining Land Rover’s huge breadth of capability and uncompromising levels of luxury and refinement.
