To get started, we have created a buying guide to cover everything you need to know about the famous Land Rover Series 1. Continue reading to learn more.
What Parts Should You Check?
Before the deal is done and you drive off in a renowned Series 1 vehicle, you need to find a reliable buyer, view the vehicle in-person and inspect it thoroughly. This includes both the inside and the outside of the vehicle. If you don’t inspect it properly, or miss even a minor issue, it could cost you more than you bargained for to repair it, we obviously don’t want this to happen. The main parts of any Series 1 model you should check include the following:
Engine and Transmission
The Series 1 vehicle has a 1.6 litre engine with 50 horsepower. The engine should be in good original condition without any damage or leaks. If you’re planning on taking it for a test drive, the vehicle transmission should shift smoothly and hold gears at all times while also being relatively quiet. Loud humming noises or other strange sounds should mean something is worn out.
Suspension, Steering, Tyres and Brakes
Next, make sure to check the tyres and the brakes. The Series 1 model has drum brakes and leaf springs, so make sure they are in good working condition. Check the tyres for any signs of wear and make sure they are in the correct size. While test driving the vehicle, the brakes should work properly and there is no excessive play in the steering or suspension.
Bodywork
When inspecting the bodywork, look out for rust and other damage. Check the frame, body and the undercarriage for signs of rust and corrosion. The common areas of rust include the chassis and the bulkhead. Rust is a common problem with classic Land Rover vehicles and it’s important to address this sooner rather than later. Additionally, check the body for any dents, scratches, or paintwork damage.
Interior
Moving to the inside of the vehicle, make sure to check the interior such as the seats, the dashboard and so on, you should be looking for signs of wear and tear. Make sure the gauge and electrical systems are working properly. This includes the lights, the horn and the wipers. The Series 1 model has a simple interior, but it’s still important to check it and see if it’s in good condition in order to get your money’s worth.
Our Verdict
Overall, the Land Rover Series 1 is a classic car worth investing in. Nothing inspires nostalgia and passion in car enthusiasts than owning an original Series 1. It has a simple rugged design that makes it ideal for off-road use and slow, steady driving. Thanks to the vehicle’s adaptability, it has become an icon in the motoring world.
The Land Rover Series 1 will always hold a special part in our company’s history. In fact, we became who we are today from the 1948 Land Rover Series 1 that John Craddock himself was restoring. This inspired him to set up his parts specialist business. It’s worth noting, if you’re just starting out with classic vehicles, or you’re not familiar with what to look out for, it might be worth bringing someone who knows and understands classic cars with you to view the vehicle, like a mechanic, to get their honest opinion.
