land rover defender through the desert

Even a car performing at the top of its game needs to replace a part or two every once and a while – just look at NASCAR and formula 1 pit stops! So it’s a good idea to keep a few spares on hand. But, if you’re not a trained mechanic, it’s hard to tell just what spares you’ll want to keep on hand, and not everyone has the kind of money to have a full machine shop in their garage.

So what are the spares that you should  keep on hand? In this article from John Craddock, we’re going to go through some of the key Land Rover Defender parts and spares you should keep around the house – just in case of emergencies.

Water

The first piece of kit that you should definitely keep in your car – no matter its state – is 2-3 litres of water. Not only is water a key component in car radiators – without which they tend to break – but water is also very useful in a physical emergency, such as dehydration. As such, we thoroughly recommend that you keep water  in your vehicle at all times.

Tyres

An oldie but a goodie! Even  the best drivers, on the best roads, can experience popped tyres or accidentally drive over something that shouldn’t be there. And when you take into account off-roading, the possibility of needing a spare tyre at least once gets higher and higher! So, it’s safe to say that you should keep at least one spare tyre on hand.

Which tyre you choose, though, depends on a number of factors – least of which is the actual dimensions of your landy.  Of course, there are the famous brands, such as Pirelli and Michelin, However, these aren’t the only brands available to you. BF Goodrich, for example, boasts a reputation and a legacy that stretches back almost 100 years. Meanwhile, Cooper have a great, almost all-encompassing range of tyres suitable for a wide number of vehicles – not just Land Rover Defenders.

Jerry Can

Another part that you should definitely have in your vehicle is spare petrol – or at least a jerry can with spare petrol in it! Jerry Cans are great pieces of equipment: they’re simple, cheap, and indispensable when you need one.

John Craddock carry a wide range of jerry cans — in a wide range of colours and sizes. Simply browse through our catalogue and find one you like.

Window Washers and Wiper Blades

The British weather is unpredictable at best. Sometimes it’s glorious, sometimes it’s the stuff of nightmares, so it’s a great idea in principle to have a set of spare wiper blades in your Land Rover at all times – and that’s not even mentioning the fact that you have to have them in order to be compliant with the highway code.

At John Craddock, we carry a wide variety of original wiper blades suitable for a range of Land Rover Defender models – including the original 1983 90 model. Our range of wiper blades mean that our customers can finally rebuild their Land Rover Defenders to their original specs – without having to compromise on form or authenticity.

Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are like umbrellas in Spain. Most of the time, you won’t need them, in fact you can go years without thinking about them. But on those hot summer days when there’s a sizzle in the air and the sound of thunder out at sea, you know you’ll be needing an umbrella soon!

The same is true for spark plugs: most of the time you won’t need them, but when you need them you need them desperately!

So make sure to keep a pair of spare spark plugs in your vehicle.
