John Craddock Ltd Magazine (January 2022)

The snows are melting, the sun is looking brighter, and each and every day the number of days since we last went on a real road trip goes up and up. That means it’s time to start thinking about the next one we go on. But where to go? Where to take our Land Rovers this year?
In 2020 and 2021, travel has been extremely difficult, if not impossible at some points. However, in 2022 it looks as though we can finally go on a real journey, free of restrictions. With this in mind, we’ve put together this great list of our top 3 journeys that we believe you should go on in 2022.

Plymouth to Marazion
Starting in the south of England, the trip from Plymouth to Marazion is a relatively short one in comparison to some. Nonetheless, it’s a great trip and one we thoroughly recommend you go on.
Starting in Plymouth, a place that prides itself as England’s one and only ocean city, you have two immediate options. Firsty, you could go north-west, over the A3064 and eventually the Tamar Bridge. Alternatively, you could head west towards Torpoint and hug the southern coast.
Personally, we prefer the second option. Not only does it take us through a number of beautiful English villages on the way, but it also means that you get to really take in those gorgeous sea views.
Whichever way you choose to go, Marazion is a great place to visit any time of the year. The beach is one of the most beautiful places in all the British isles – having been designated amongst the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Beauty in 1959. And the town is simply stunning – boasting some truly beautiful views.
Wexford to Ballycastle
For our next trip, we’ll be jumping islands.
Going the full length of Ireland’s eastern coast, Wexford to Ballycastle is one of the best road trips you can go on in the British Isles.
Starting in the Republic of Ireland, this trip starts in the small town of Wexford, an old Viking settlement which has never forgotten its history. This makes for a fantastic combination of sea views and historical architecture that stretches back to the ninth century.
From there you’ll most likely take the M11 north, going through a long swathe of beautiful and quaint coastal towns as you go. Before you know it, you’ll be in Arklow – the home of the famous Seabreeze festival and the titular setting of Van Morrison’s 1974 song Streets of Arklow.
After you’ve spent a bit of time in this small, beautiful village, you’ll be heading north once again. Soon, you’ll have a choice to make: continue down onto the M1 or go through Dublin itself.
Quite a few people dislike going through busy cities, but for us the opportunity to spend a few hours or even days in Ireland’s capital city is an opportunity too good to miss out on. Dublin is a city quite unlike any other: at once it is a Georgian throwback and an ultra-modern hip scene; a place of art and literature and a modern industrial powerhouse. Dublin is quite potentially all things to all people, and we thoroughly recommend you spend at least a few hours there. Most important for Land Rover drivers, Dublin has many car parks for motorists – meaning that you’ll be able to walk around and listen to the craic for a little while.
When you’re finished, you’ll be heading up the M1 again, passing through Swords and then Dundalk. Once you’ve passed Dundalk, you’ll be heading into rural Northern Ireland, where your journey takes you towards Belfast.
Belfast is the second largest city in Ireland behind Dublin and the 12th largest city in the United Kingdom. With a rich history, as well as a thriving tourism industry, Belfast is a great city to spend a few hours in before the last leg of your journey takes you towards Ballycastle.
The Wexford to Ballycastle journey is a fantastic one for both experienced road trippers and first timers. Not only do you get the opportunity to see some of the fantastic Irish scenery and some of the most colourful cities in Ireland. What could be more exciting?
Ben Nevis to Yr Wyddfa
From one one fantastic trip to another, from one mountain to another, the Ben Nevis to Yr Wyddfa is another long journey, taking you from the Scottish Highlands to the north of Wales.
First of all, you’ll be going through Glencoe: the home of Scottish Mountaineering, a landscape well suited to a Land Rover. Next, you’ll be going through Loch Lamond and the Trossachs National Park area – a truly stunning part of Scotland where you should spend at least a few hours.
Going south, you’ll be passing through Glasgow: one of the UK’s premier cities and the largest city in Scotland. Glasgow has a rich history and wild nightlife scene, but for the Land Rover enthusiast the true treat comes next: over a hundred miles of Scottish countryside as you pass through the M8 and the M74.
Eventually, after a long and heavenly drive, you’ll pass through Gretna Green – what had once been the destination for many young lovers – and then over the Scottish border into England. This is a leisurely drive, free of distraction or chaos. It’s the kind of drive you go on to think, to listen to that really great album, to get to know yourself. This route will take you through the English North, hugging the coast past Lancaster and Preston before going through Greater Manchester and the north of Cheshire.
When you get to Howarden, your journey takes a sharp turn North West as you head deeper into Wales, first on the A94 and then on the A55. From here, your journey will take you through Colwyn Bay and the North Welsh coast before taking another drastic turn south towards Snowdonia National Park. Wales is a beautiful place, full of lush green valleys and some of the best roads in the United Kingdom. We thoroughly recommend you spend at least some time here, taking in everything, before heading west again, to just south of Snowdonia.
The Ben Nevis to Yr Wyddfe journey is one of our favourite journeys here at John Craddock. It takes you through some of the most beautiful vistas in the United Kingdom, as well as some of the most stimulating cities in Scotland and England. If you go on one drive this year, make it this one.
