John Craddock Ltd Magazine (General News)

Think of a Land Rover, and you think of a Defender. With its iconic shape and long heritage, it symbolises the essence of Land Rovers and charters the course of the company’s development. It will be a sad day then in December of this year, when the Solihull production of the current Defender will stop (don’t worry we’ll still stock all of our Land Rover Defender parts!). Instead of choosing to despair at retiring such a great model from English production, Land Rover are using 2015 to celebrate the Defender’s long and fruitful past. To start this monumental year they reached back into the history of the defender, to give you a glimpse into the creation of our much loved model.

A Quick History of the Defender:

It all started on a beach in Anglesey in 1947. The initial idea didn’t come from a board room full of designers with high tech equipment. Instead Maurice Wilks (the Engineering Director of Rover) etched the design into the sand. His aim was to produce an agricultural vehicle that could deal with the rigours of country life. He then showed his brother Spencer and the Director of Rover his sand sketch, and a year later the original Defender was in production. Since this point multiple models and designs have been in manufacture. To celebrate this, Land Rover went back to the original beach and carved a 1km Defender into the sands, marking its original design. They will also release three limited edition models: The Heritage; The Adventure; The Autobiography.
