Range Rover L405 (2012 – Present)

The Range Rover L405 is the 4th Generation of the Range Rover Series. This full-sized luxury SUV made its debut at the 2012 Paris Show and went on sale later in the same year.

Re-imagining the Range Rover

For this generation of the Range Rover an all-aluminium monocoque body was used in its construction. The use of an all-aluminium structure meant the vehicle was much lighter than its predecessor, up to 420kg lighter in fact.

Terrain Response

The L405 also features a new version of Terrain Response (also present in the 2nd Generation Discovery Sport) which is called Terrain Response 2. This upgrade to driving technology allows the vehicle to automatically adjust to the appropriate combination of terrain response settings with no input from the driver. This system can be manually used by the driver too, offering maximum drivability in almost all conditions at the flick of a switch. Terrain Response 2 will reconfigure transmission, traction and suspension for Rock Crawl, Grass, Gravel & Snow, Mud & Ruts and Sand.

Engine & Transmission

Early models featured a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines, all with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Further iterations of this 4th Gen vehicle saw the addition of a 2.0 L I4 Ingenium petrol Plug-in Hybrid engine for the 2019 Range Rover. The vehicle also has permanent four-wheel drive and 50/50 torque split, along with a two-speed transfer case.

A rotary shifter on the centre console is where the gears can be selected. Or, alternatively, this can be achieved manually through the paddle shift controls on the steering wheel.

Suspension

This Range Rover features air suspension, much like its predecessors. This allows for variable ride height, which is ideal for off-roading. There are a number of suspension modes which can be selected such as ‘access’, ‘normal on road’ and ‘off road’.

Through the automated load levelling mechanism vehicle movements are continually analysed and acted upon, automatically adjusting front and rear suspension units and enhancing control and stability at high speeds.

Range Rover LWB Autobiography Black

The Range Rover Long Wheelbase Autobiography Black is a limited edition LWB Range Rover which was launched at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show. A limited version of the 2014-year model, the badging is rendered in black and enamel and chrome as well as 7-spoke 21-inch wheels with a high gloss polished finish.

There are plenty of interior changes to this limited-edition vehicle, too. For example, the Autobiography Black features bespoke seat covers, new rear centre console, rear entertainment screens and a choice of 3 luxurious interior colour schemes.
